Lanai Snorkeling Half Day from Kaanapali (Morning Tour)
If you want the “big island day” feel without committing to an all-day boat trip, our Lanai Snorkeling Half Day is a streamlined morning adventure from Kaanapali Beach. You’ll spend the morning crossing the Maui Nui waters toward Lanai to snorkel clear reef areas, enjoy snacks and drinks onboard, and be back by late morning, perfect if you have other plans in Lahaina, Kaanapali, or Kapalua.
This tour runs approximately 4 hours and is recommended for ages 5+. Please plan to check in 30 minutes before departure so we can keep the morning moving and get you on the water on time.
What to Expect (Tour Flow)
Your experience starts right in front of Whaler’s Village at Kaanapali Beach. From there, you’ll be transferred offshore in 14-foot hard-bottom inflatable rafts (up to 6 passengers at a time) to board the main boat, the Sanity, which is moored off Kaanapali Beach.
Once onboard, the crew sets you up for a simple, comfortable snorkel morning:
- Safety briefing + gear check: Quick overview of ocean entry/exit, flotation options, and snorkel basics.
- Scenic crossing: Enjoy views of West Maui and Lanai while the crew watches for marine life along the way.
- Snorkel session(s): The captain selects the best area based on visibility and conditions on the day.
- Return cruise: Relax, warm up, and enjoy the ride back to Kaanapali.
Snorkeling conditions vary daily, but common sightings can include tropical reef fish, sea turtles, rays, and occasional dolphins during crossings. During humpback season (typically December 15 through May 15), your snorkel trip can also include whale sightings while traveling – a winter-only bonus that makes the morning even more memorable.

Seasonality and Ocean Conditions
Lanai snorkeling can be excellent year-round, but conditions depend on wind and swell. Summer is often calmer; winter can bring larger surf and more variable crossings. If conditions are not suitable for a safe and enjoyable snorkel, the captain may adjust the location or timing for the best experience.
Humpback season note: During winter (December 15 – May 15), whales are commonly present in the Maui Nui waters. While this is not a dedicated whale watch, it’s common to see spouts and surface activity during the crossing.
Wildlife viewing etiquette: We follow responsible marine wildlife viewing practices. If you’d like official guidelines on respectful wildlife
encounters in Hawaiʻi waters, see NOAA’s visitor guidance from the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary
here.
